Hard luck to the Glenealy  players who travelled with the Under 14 County Squad to Newry last Saturday.  The won their first two matches to earn a place in the Cup semi-final, but were unlucky to lose that match.

Our Under 10 have had a busy few days.  On Friday evening  they played a blitz in the county grounds in Aughrim, beating Arklow Rocks and Tinahealy and drawing a close game with Kiltegan.

Then early the following morning on they travelled to a blitz in Carlow.  They were a little slow out of the blocks understandably but overcame Raheny and Kilmacow from Kilkenny in style., winning both games they played.   Well done to all the players and parents.

Congratulations to the Glenealy players who were involved with the Under 16 County  squad who won the All Ireland B Shield in Newry last Saturday.  They were Ryan Devlin, Ronan Manley, Dean O Gorman, Aaron Meade, Robin Keogh and Brendan Hawes and mentor Noel Geraghty.

Last Saturday morning we hosted an Under 10 blitz.  It was a beautiful sunny morning and teams travelled from Cuala , Gorey (Naomh Eanna)  and Kilcoole.

We played 11 a side and the Glenealy Under 10’s were all fantastic, we beat Kilcoole and Cuala in two very evenly matched games. Against Naomh Eanna, our lads played with great skill and determination and never gave up, but had to succumb to a very strong team.

A very big thank you to Lizzie Mc Elhinney and the parents who put on a fantastic spread.  Well done to all who baked beautiful cakes and made sandwiches.  All in all a great day for the club.

Monday 10th December 2012

Glenealy hall was a hive of activity last Saturday night at our presentation of medals and Christmas party.   We had a fantastic turnout – we can rest assured - the future of hurling and camogie is secure in Glenealy.   A sincere thank you to all the parents who helped out, whether it was  decorating  the hall for the night, helping  out with the goodies or  preparing  the reindeer food for the little ones to take home.    A very special mention to Nollaig and Breda who transformed the meeting room into a magical grotto for Santa, complete with rocking chair and fire -  It made me want to be small enough to go visit Santa too. Thanks a million to John O Gorman who filled in very admirably for Rudolf in getting Santa to the Hall - Santa was delighted to be on the back of a Honda Goldwing - he thought it made a great change from the sleigh.   Everybody helping out like this is what goes to make Glenealy The Small Club with The Big Heart.

Our calendars are proving to be a big hit and are selling like hot cakes.  The launch was held on Sunday night in Kings and by Monday morning several calendars were winging their way to Canada, Australia, America and England.  There is a great selection of photographs from the little ones in Croke Park to the 1959 team, from our present Three in a row champions to our U13 Camogie girls with their three- in- one- year cups!  Something for everyone.   They are priced at just €10 and  ALL proceeds go to our new development at Ballyfree.  They are available at Kings, from Sheila Driver, Ian O’Neill or Meg Geraghty (087 9306667).  Don’t delay – get yours today!

A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes at Glenealy Club Development fundraising committee – and next Sunday evening in Kings at 6.30pm  they will be launching  a  2013 Calendar - which will commemorate the achievements of the club over the years.  It will feature various teams and events and  will fit nicely on walls all over the village ( in between the photos of the Pope and John F Kennedy ).  The calendar has a  broad section of photos and has captured some of the great times we have enjoyed over the years.  The Calendars will be on sale for €10 with all proceeds going to our new development at Ballyfree.  Calendars can be purchased on the night and will be available from Kings, Ian O’Neill,  Sheila Driver or if you would like your calendar delivered in person – just contact Meg on 087 9306667.  Ballyfree – Link to our past – Bridge to our future.

Rarely a week passes on the Glenealy Juvenile notes that the name Sheila Driver doesn’t get mentioned.  She our one woman human dynamo, our hurling heroine, our Mrs. Glenealy. If you want to know anything concerning Glenealy Juveniles – just ask Sheila.  If you need to change a fixture – contact  Sheila.  If you’re buying or selling tickets – Sheila’s the one.

Our Sheila had a little bit of a health set back  recently.  In her many, many years of service to the GAA (and many more to come), Sheila has touched a lot of people.  If everybody that has ever come into contact with Sheila would say a prayer for her speedy recovery – she’d be back bossing us around in no time!  Sheila,  go raibh biseach ort gan mhoill.

 Monday 15th October 2012

When I took the job as PRO for Glenealy Juveniles all I wanted was to promote the love of hurling within our club and if possible to a wider audience. The aim has always been to say encouraging words to the lads – bring them along,  put the bad days down to experience and keeping on hurling.  This week, my heart is heavy, as I am not one to court controversy, but in order to do that -  do I say nothing at all about the fiasco that was the heartbreak of the Under 14 final on Sunday?  What do you say to lads who were not beaten by another team but by the referee ?  Avondale – ye were worthy opponents and thank you for the match.  Glenealy U-14 hurlers – ye are a  great bunch lads and we salute you all – to a man.  Cóiste na nÓg The players of this county deserve better – I’m sorry if that’s considered crossing a line-  but you must  Give Respect to Get Respect!!!

Monster draw takes place on Sat 20th October in Kings at 7pm.  Please get you tickets back to Sheila or drop them into Kings  as soon as you can.  If anybody needs me to collect their tickets, I will gladly do that.    Phone Meg on 087 930 66 67.

Monday 8th October 2012

Glenealy Juvenile Hurling Notes:

Our under 12s travelled to Avondale last Saturday and put up a fantastic display of hurling. They were just a point down at half time and the second half was a hard fought battle. They were very unlucky to be beaten by a point by Eire Og Greystones, but to a man they played their hearts out.  Well done to Charlie Cruise, Oisin O Neill,  Jack Byrne,  Connor Hawes,  Cian O Neill,  Paddy  Dunne,  Jamie Byrne, Jack Manley, Connor Devlin, James Byrne, Sam O’Dowd, and TJ O’Neill.  Many thanks to the parents for their support throughout the year, and especially on Saturday.  Thanks too to the mentors, as without them giving so freely and so generously of their time, our lads would never know the joys of hurling.

We have delayed the monster draw by a week – it will now take place on Sat 20th October in Kings.  Anyone who would like to return their sold  Monster Draw tickets can either drop them into Sheila or contact Meg on 087 930 6667 and she will collect them from you.  Don’t’ forget if you get your tickets back by October 12th,  you can  go into a draw for a Glenealy Tracksuit.  The monies raised from the Monster Draw goes to the day to day running of our club, so you help is greatly appreciated.

Monday 27th August

Our U-12s played against Eire Óg last week and while we only had 11 players, most of them still playing under 10, the lads played very well and  were ahead for most of the game.  Unfortunately, as we lost a player to injury towards the end,  Eire Óg  were the victors on the night.  Well done to Charlie Cruise who had a great game in the goals.  Overall it was a great performance from such a young team.

Our under 16s  travelled to Carnew last Monday and battled hard but were unlucky to be beaten on the night.  We were just two points down with minutes to go, when the ball rebounded off the upright and was cleared down the field for a Carnew goal.  A minute later they snatched another opportunity to better our backs and keeper and went in for another goal.  Such are the joys of hurling – unfortunately,  the final score doesn’t always reflect the effort put in.

This is the last week for the  collection for the Lucozade Sport bottle tops.  Our thanks to all who helped out.  If you still have some for us, can you get them to Sheila this week, the more we have -  the better our chance of winning.

A little note for parents.  There have been great advances in technology in the last ten years and one of the best inventions ever has got to be mobile phone and the arrival of text messaging.  Now all details regarding times and venues for matches can be communicated directly to your phone via group texts – so everybody has the same information at pretty much the same time.  However – it would appear that not all phones have been fitted with a reply button – so when a mentor asks to please text back to confirm availability – nothing happens.  Could all parents please check their phone to see if the reply button is broken and contact your service provided to see if it can be repaired.  Imagine the joy you could bring to a mentor life by this simple thing.

23rd July 2012

On Friday night we hosted a go games blitz for under 8’s and Under 10’s.  We were delighted to welcome teams from Barndarrig, Éire Óg and Kilcoole.  Thankfully the weather was kind to us and a great night was had by all.   There was a great turnout and well done to all the kids involved as they provided plenty of entertainment for the spectators and many thanks to all the parents who travelled and supported the kids.
We are still looking for  Lucozade Sport bottle caps. We need to collect  500 caps by  the end of August to enter into a draw for €5,000.   Further details from Sheila. We are not asking you to start drinking Lucozade Sport, but if it’s your sports drink of choice could you please, please, please keep the bottle tops for us.

Don’t forget the draw takes place this Saturday,  so there’s just a few days left to get your tickets  for the fantastic draw the club are running with the village hall.  Just imagine the bliss of having €3,000 to spend on a holiday plus €1,000 spending money all for just €5 a ticket.  Tickets are available from the usual suspects – Sheila, Meg, Niall Mac, Ian or you can buy them online at www.glenealy.gaa.ie.  Draw takes place on July 14th.

Our U-14 team played Arklow Rocks at home on Wednesday night.  With nine players on the squad playing Under 14 again next year, this young team produced a brave display against a stronger Arklow side.  Even though we lost, there were some good performances with Robert Browne as full back and Jamie Byrne as goalkeeper being of particular note.  Our thanks to Joe Driver for his assistance on the night.

Our U-16’s played Michael Dwyers last Monday night at home.  Our squad was depleted due to holidays and injury, however we ran out worthy winners.  Our thanks to Tommy Doyle Senior for his assistance on the night.

 20th May 2012

Unfortunately the U8 and U10 go games were cancelled last Friday night due to bad weather.

Our U16’s played against Bray Emmets on Monday night, although our lads were beaten, this was a very committed performance from a dedicated bunch of players.  Each and every one gave one hundred percent to the game.  This was the last game until after the Junior Cert.  The mentors would like to wish the lads all the very best in their upcoming exams.

Our under 12’s had their first match of the season last Monday night against Enniskerry.  All the lads played very well with great performances from James Byrne and Shane Manley and a superb goal form Cian O’Neill.   Well done to all involved.

On Sunday 3rd June we are having Lá na gClub...Family Fun day at The Park.  Apart from the usual camogie and hurling matches we will have; a Bar B Que with our very own Gordon Ramsey; Mixed relay races where you have to solo half the pitch with a hurl and ball  and then pass the sliotar to your teammates hurl to do the next lap.  Get your teams ready! ;  husband and wife three legged race;   penalty shoot outs; wheel of fortune; face painting; and of course the day would not be complete without the golden oldies match.  Rumour has it that the sales of WD40 and three-in-one Oil  have trebled in the Glenealy area recently as rusty limbs are being made match fit for the 3rd June.   Later that night, all adults are being invited to come along to the hall for a great night of music and dance. Further details from Sheila , Niall Mac, Niall Nolan, Ian or  Meg .

27TH NOVEMBER 2011

Glenealy Juvenile Notes

congratulations to our Minor Hurlers who emerged worthy winners of the Minor A Hurling title following  two spectacular games of hurling.  The first drawn game was a tense and a nail biting affair, but the match on Sunday was, as our American cousins would say, ‘Awesome’.  This game was drawn again, thanks to a spectacular point by Gavin Weir and so  extra time had to be played.

From start to finish this was exhibition hurling –the kind of stuff that makes you proud to be involved in hurling in Wicklow -  the kind of stuff you want your sons to play – the kind of stuff you’d gladly get out of bed in the middle of the night to watch!  Well done lads – a great win and a great day for hurling.

 AGM

17TH OCTOBER 2011

Last Friday night saw a large gathering in The Clubhouse for the presentation of medals to our Under 14 Shield winners. We were very lucky that Leighton Glynn was  able to take time out of his busy schedule to present the medals to the lads.   We too had a presentation to make to Leighton and in the absence of our Chairman Nigel Manley, Paddy Staunton did the honours.  Paddy congratulated Leighton on being chosen to represent Ireland in the Australian rules.  Leighton, he said,  is a great role model for our juveniles and a great ambassador for Glenealy and Wicklow.  Paddy had commissioned a hand carved Walnut  plaque in which Leighton could display his many medals.  Leighton gave an inspirational speech to the Under 14’s in which he reminded the lads that they are the future of hurling in Glenealy and in the county.  Leighton played his first senior game for Glenealy at 16,  so in two years time,  some of these Under 14’s could be chasing him for his spot on the team……..

Thank you Leighton for taking the time to attend and best of luck in Australia, from all in Glenealy Juvenile Hurling Club.

Next Scrap Saturday date:  5th November.  Why not clear out your wardrobe in time for Christmas and save all your old clothes, shoes, handbags, belts for us.  We’re also looking for old metal – washing machines, dishwashers, iron gates, combine harvesters – whatever metal is out the back that you never got round to getting rid of… we can collect. 28TH SEPTEMBER 2011

Last Friday night saw the last of the U-8 and U-10 blitzes for the year. Donal’s U-8 Gleann Fhaídhle team were very pleased with the night winning two of their three matches. Training has now moved indoors for these lads every Friday evening from six to seven in Avondale. Contact Donal or Colm if you need a lift.

Michael Anthony's U-8 Glenealy lads won all three matches. They had a great year overall – winning 27 of their thirty matches – losing only two and drawing one. Well done lads.

Ciarán and Colm were very happy with how their U-10s performed all year at the various blitz.

All of the mentors would like to thank all of the lads and the parents for their cooperation throughout the year.

Our U-12s took on Bray Emmets in the last round of the league. Under the watchful eye of Bosco O’Neill and Niall Mac Lochlainn, the lads ran out easy winners in this encounter. Well done to Conor Devlin who gave an All-Star performance on the day.

Best wishes to the senior team next Sunday in the final. There will be face painting at the Club house from 11am. The ladies from the juvenile committee are going to paint the town red and white.  We’ll have face painting, red hairspray, red and white nail polish, red and white braids - all for just €3 per child.

We also have Car Flags (with the Glenealy Crest), and other red and white flags for sale. Contact Meg on 087-9306667. All money raised goes to the juvenile club.

On Saturday 1st October we are going to have an ‘Up For The Match’  night in Kings – this will incorporate the official launch of our Glenealy GAA website.  Hope to see you all there.

U-8 Blitz

Our U-8s travelled to Carnew last Friday night. Colm and Donal were very pleased with all the lads on the ‘Gleann Fhaídhle’ team – they played really well and showed fantastic heart and skill. Please note that from Thurs-15 the training for this team will move indoors to the hall. Training will be at 6pm.

Our UU-16s were beaten by Carnew in the Championship Semi-Final at Aughrim. They now play Éire Óg in the Shield Semi-Final.

Remember lads, hurling is all about luck – the more you practice, the luckier you get.

We have decided to run another Scrap Saturday fundraiser in October. We have the capacity to collect items as we go along and store them – so if you have an old washing machine, dishwasher, lawnmower, metal gates, cookers, etc contact Niall on 087-1322530 or Sheila on 086-8683395 and they can organise to pick them up.

On Monday night our U-12 team had a great win over Arklow Rock Parnells. Although they were behind at half-time, an inspiring half time speech from manager Bosco made sure that they came back very strongly to come out worthy winners. There were some great blocks from the backs to deny the Arklow forwards. Well done to Fionn Mac Lochlainn on his goal mid-way through the second half.

On Wednesday night our U-14s travelled to Aughrim to meet Arklow Rock Parnells again, this time in the Shield Final. It is fair to say that to a man they played their hearts out from beginning to end and were deserving winners. It is hard to pick out a man of the match; Rory O’Kelly, Dean O’Gorman and Aaron Meade were just some of the contenders that spring to mind. Reece Devlin played an excellent role in the goals with Robin Keogh, just back from injury, showing great potential. But it was hard to argue with the choice of Ryan Devlin, captain on the night, as the ultimate winner of the man of the match. Well done lads and well done to Bosco O’Neill, Noel Geraghty and Niall MacLochlainn for all their work with this team during the year. Remembering that a lot of this U-14 team are actually U-12 – the future looks bright for hurling in Glenealy.

As Scrap Saturday was a great success and we filled the container two hours earlier than anticipated, we have decided to run another one in mid-October. We have the capacity to collect items as we go along and store them – so if you have any old washing machines, dishwashers, lawnmowers, metal gates or cookers  contact Niall on 087-1322530 or Sheila on 086-8683395 and they can organise to pick them up.

Our Under 8s were in action last Friday night in Aughrim.

Michael Anthony’s Glenealy team had a good night losing only one match. They won one and drew the other one. The team would like to send best wishes to Cole Byrne who injured his hand. Hope it gets better soon Cole.

Colm and Donal’s Gleann Fhaídhle team had a great night in Aughrim winning 2 matches and were unlucky to be narrowly beaten in the third match. Well done lads – ye all played very well.

Reminder: Scrap Saturday takes place next Saturday, the 3rd of September. We are looking for old cookers, washing machines,  dishwashers,  radiators and any old metals and also old clean clothes, shoes, handbags, sheets, etc. We can organise collection of larger items. If you need any further information contact Meg on 087-9306667.

Well done to all Glenealy players who were involved in the underage County teams on Saturday. Some lads even won two All-Ireland medals on the same day with the U-16 and Minor teams.
