The New Development

posted 13 Jan 2013, 13:14 by Glenealy Hurling   [ updated 23 Apr 2015, 10:15 ]

This is probably one of the most exciting times in the history of Glenealy GAA.
We have purchased 20.94 acres at Ballyfree, opposite the school.

The idea to purchase these grounds, and develop them stemmed from the realisation that even though our current GAA facilities have served us well, they are insufficient for our long term needs.

A Club Development Committee was formed comprising of Paddy
Staunton, Joe Linnane, Nigel Manley and Noel Geraghty.

They have been looking at all options for the past three years and being in a position to announce the option to purchase the lands is the just the start of the dream.

We are well aware that in order to accomplish a project of this magnitude a tremendous volunteer effort will be needed from our committed community of players, coaches, parents and fans.  The group that we have put together, who are very much committed to fundraising ,  are delighted to be involved in securing grounds and  playing facilities for Glenealy that we will be proud to call our own.

Chairperson:     Ian O’Neill,  Treasurer, Glenealy Hurling Club,    Owner Wicklow Bookkeeping Services

Committee members:

Denis Fielding      Managing Director Acuity SOS Ltd and Former President  Wicklow & District Chamber of                                     Commerce and also president of the Wicklow  County  Chamber of Commerce

Sheila Driver          Secretary Glenealy Juvenile Committee

William Cullen,       Chairperson Glenealy Camogie

Meg Geraghty,       Assistant secretary Glenealy Hurling Club, Juvenile PRO,

Mairead Dooley-Ffrench (Business Development Manager, Ireland, Oracle Applications)

Our fundraising plans involve a mix of ‘one-off’ projects and events that can be run on an annual basis.  We will always strive to come up with fresh and  innovative ideas that capture the imagination and the limited purse strings of the public.

We are very conscious that the day to day fundraising for the club must continue also and have appointed  Meg Geraghty as a liaison between both committees to ensure that there is no overlap.  We have also looked to projects that would get the support of a wider audience and are very mindful of the fact that we cannot continually look to the same pockets for support.

The Senior hurlers qualified for the semi final of their Division in the Leinster League last Saturday, when the defeated Clodiagh Gaels from Offaly in the Park.In a game played in blustery and wet conditions they adapted better. They availed of the strong breeze in the first half and built up a commanding lead of 2-9 to 0-0 at halftime, indeed they could have been a couple of more goals to the good only for over elaboration on the ball.In the second half the defended resolutely, and while Clodiagh reduced the deficit somewhat, they never looked like winning the game. The final score was 2-12 to 1-4.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 2.4.18.25.The Jackpot this week stands at €2,300.

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Mary King last week after a long battle with serious illness, fought courageously and with great dignity.Mary was the wife of local Publican and former Club Secretary Peter King.Mary from the time she came to Glenealy became part of the fabric of our Village, always taking a keen interest in  Community affairs, and was well known for her, kindness, great humor, and generosity of spirit, she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.To her husband Peter, her mother Marie, her daughters Sarah and Sinead, her sisters Theresa,Liz and Ann,her brother Stephen,he grand daughter Aoife, and to her extended family and many, many friends,we extend our deepest sympathy.May she rest in Peace.

Well the big night finally came last Saturday evening, when 6 couples took to the floor to represent Glenealy Hurling Club against old rivals Carnew in Strictly Come Dancing, and what a night it was.from the opening Hurling Haka led by the one and only Tony Doyle,to the closing Yee Haw foot stomping routine from Tony and Michelle Esmonde,it was entertainment all the way. There was great excitement in the Amber Springs Hotel and the atmosphere was just electric. It was a brilliant night,s entertainment from both Clubs.Well done to all the Glenealy dancers who gave it their all,as is the Glenealy way.Katriona and David,Gina and Shane,Hayley and Paul,Patriece and Warren,Meg and Noel, and last but by no means least,Michelle and Tony.It is no easy task to get up and perform in front of such a big crowd, especially as some of them had never been on a stage before, but they did so admirably.Patriece and Warren represented Glenealy in the dance off,but had to give best to a very professional and acrobatic couple from Carnew. To both Cubs a big thank you for a fantastic nights entertainment,it was an occasion when everyone was really a winner.Well done to everyone.

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the untimely passing of Patsy Byrne recently.Patsy was a member of one of Glenealy,s best known GAA family's.The Byrnes of Chapel Lane.Patsy with his brother Seamus played a big part in Glenealy winning the Junior Championship and League at the first attempt in 1971 when  the Club had reformed, although Patsy had lived in Rathdrum for many years,he never forgot his roots, and would be very quick to defend Glenealy if someone made a derogatory comment about his home village or hurling team.Patsy was laid to rest  last Wednesday, and it was fitting he was accompanied by many of his old team mates  who walked with him in a guard of honour from Rathdrum Church to his final resting place in Rathdrum Cemetery.Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to Patsy,s wife Mary-Jo,his sons Adrian and Joseph, daughter Pauline, brothers Anthony,Noel,Seamus and Bernie, sister Mary, his Grandchildren, nephews and nieces, his extended family and his many friends.May he Rest in Peace.

21st September 2015

The senior hurlers tamely exited the 2015 Championship at the semifinal stage last Saturday evening in Aughrim when they were defeated by arch rivals Carnew.Glenealys games again Carnew have always been highly competitive and combative affairs down the years, and great mental strength is needed to prevail,on Saturday when cool heads and leadership on the field was needed it was sadly missing. After playing again a stiff breeze in the first half we were level at the break,0-7 each, and could have had the lead only for a couple of bad wides,it was a game we had the winnings of,but our own actions dictated otherwise and we ended up losing 2-12 to 0-11.We wish Carnew good luck in the County final again Bray and may the best side win.

Well done to our Junior hurlers who made no mistake in their semifinal replay against Fergal Og.We put in a much better display on this occasion and finished up winning 0-20 to 1-7.They meet Arklow Rocks in the final and this will be a much sterner test of their character.

7th September 2015

The senior hurlers had a good victory over arch rivals Carnew last Saturday evening.Usually when these two sides meet there is very little in it and so it proved in this well contested game. The main difference was a well taken Danny Staunton goal in a 1-12 to 0-11 win.The two sides will meet again in the senior championship semi final in a couple weeks.

The Senior team had their first outing of the year last Sunday at Aughrim where the took on County champions Bray.We got off to a very slow start, while Bray hit the ground running, and built up a 0-6 to 0-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. We settled into the game better after this initial period, and Wayne O,Gorman scored one of his trademark goal to reduce the deficit, but unfortunately some slack defending let Bray respond straight away with a goal of their own.Bray held a 5 point lead at halftime 1-9 to 1-4.In the second half we kept chipping away at Brays lead and out scored them 1-7 to 0-7,but we could never get ahead and finished losing the game by 2 points,1-16 to 2-11.The Glenealy scorers were Gavin Weir 1-8,Wayne O,Gorman 1-0,and Warren Kavanagh,Enan Glynn and Tommy Doyle 0-1 each.

22nd June 2015

There was major disappointment for the Senior and Intermediate hurlers in their Championship games at the weekend, when it was learned that their respective opponents Avondale and Arklow Rock would not be fielding teams.Unfortunately it is a sad indictment of where Wicklow  hurling is at the present time, and things are likely to get much worse before they get better, unless there is a concerted effort by all players and Clubs to prioritise  their standards.

The Intermediate side hosted Carnew in Div 2 of the Spring League last Monday evening, and after a good competitive game, they shared the spoils 1-9 to 012.

The Juniors travelled to Kiltegan on Wednesday evening and came out on the right side of the scoreboard by the bare minimum 2-12 to 2-11.There next game is in the Park this Wednesday evening (Tonight) when they host Western Gaels.

Congratulations to Nuala and Julie Doyle who won €1,500 in the May County Development Draw. The June draw if fixed for the last Friday of the Month.

8th June 2015

The Senior and Intermediate teams both had good wins in the Spring League over the weekend. The Seniors played St.Pats in the Park on Friday evening and won comfortably without having to lose to  much sweat. The forwards with Leighton Glynn and Gavin Weir to the fore  always had to much for the Pats backs and scored at ease, while the backs with Warren Kavanagh particularly prominent always had the measure of the Pats forwards. The final score was 4-15 to 0-9.

The Intermediate team travelled to Arklow on Saturday evening to play the Rocks and collected the points without to much difficulty. The final score here was 3-12 to 1-8.

The Juniors travelled to Greystones on Wednesday very much understrength and payed the penalty, losing 1-14 to 1-10.

23rd November  2014

Congratulations to our Intermediate hurlers who won the Championship last Sunday, when they defeated Carnew in a well contested final played in Arklow.

Understandably with the couple of weeks the Village has had to bear, we were slow out of the blocks, and Carnew had built up a 1-2 to 0-2 lead after 10 minutes.

We started to settle and with Ruadhri O'Neill accurate from frees,we were only a point down approaching half time 1-5 to 0-7, then just as the ref was looking at his watch to blow for the break Liam De Hora rattled the net and we went in leading 1-7 to 1-5.

Carnew got the first score of the second with a pointed free, but then we started to turn the screw, after some hard graft from James Manley and Dean Franey,Ruadhri O,Neill crashed another one to the net, this was quickly followed by a James Manley point, and we were on our way when further points from Paul O'Brien and Jamie Byrne put us into a 6 point lead. 2-11 to 1-7 and that is how the game finished.  This was a great team performance with every player giving everything they had,and it was a proud Captain Declan Conyard who stepped forward to accept the cup on behalf of his team.

It was with sadness that we heard of the untimely death of Vincent Caffrey,Carrig View recently.Vincent was a very popular member of the Community and a great supporter of Glenealy Hurling Club.We extend our deepest sympathy to his daughters Michelle and Madeline, his son Christopher,Mai,his partner Theresa and family, his sons in law, daughter in law, grandchildren and the extended family.May he rest in Peace.

16th November 2014

A dark cloud descended over the small close knit community of Glenealy last Monday week, when word started to spread that that morning that Hayden O'Flaherty had lost his life in a tragic motoring accident the previous night.  Glenealy is an area that has had more than its fair share of tragedy down the years and this latest one  left everyone devastated and numb with shock.

Hayden was one of the Villages favourite sons, well known for his cheeky grin, great humour, and his willingness to give anyone in need a helping hand.

Hayden's family is one of the most respected in the area, who are always at the forefront of any Community affairs.Hayden's great loves were cars and pool, and of course coming from Glenealy,  hurling would also play a big part in his life.  He wore the famed red and white of Glenealy from under age right up to adult level.

The regard that Hayden was held in could be seen by the massive turnout of people from the Village, and the surrounding areas,to show their last respects to this very popular young man.  Glenealy hurling club provided a guard of honour from his house to Glenealy Church, which included many of his team mates, and the Cortege was lead by two cars one red and one white, driven by two of his closest friends.

After an emotional service in the Church, a guard of honour was provided by many of Hayden's school friends from Wicklow Vocational School at the Church gates, and as the Cortege left for Rathdrum it was preceeded by many of Hayden's friends in their cars affording him their respect.

Hayden was laid to rest in the family plot in Rathdrum Cemetery last Wednesday.

Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to Haydens father and mother,Vincent and Ann,his brothers Vinten, Vincent and Karl. his grandmother Annie, his girlfriend Jamie, his Uncles and Aunts, his many cousins, the extended family, and his many friends.   May he rest in Peace.

Glenealy Hurling Club extends its condolence to the family of Jim (Buxie) Duffy, St.Laurence's Park,Wicklow and formerly of The Bank,Rathnew.  Jim came from a family with strong connections to Glenealy Hurling Club, his son Jimmy was on the Minor championship winning team of 1978, his brother Matt played on the team that reached the Senior final in 1977, while Jim himself won two Minor hurling championships with Glenealy in 1950 and 1951.

To Jim's wife Kathleen,daughter Margaret,sons Jimmy,Patrick and Brendan,sister Martha,brothers Mick and Matt, and to the extended family,our deepest sympathy's.RIP.

9th November 2014

Despite a battling performance for the full 60 minutes in Pearse Park on Saturday,Glenealy fell short in seeking a consolation at Minor level.

The reds had the worst possible start when we were reduced to 14 men after one of our players was red carded for an off the ball tussle with his marker.Despite that there followed a fairly even contest in the first half until the concession off a softish goal after a goalmouth scramble.  Carnew added a couple more points from frees to lead 1-6 to 0-3 at halftime.  The second half was barely a minute old when we were hit with another sucker punch when Carnew scored their second goal.   But in true Glenealy style our lads kept battling away,no more epitomised than than by the efforts of Stephen Cruise and Reece Devlin.

We got to grips with midfield and with Paul O,Brien,Ryan Devlin and George O,Brien getting a few timely scores we were still in the game with a chance. With time running out big Stevie Cruise was moved to the edge of the square and this paid immediate dividends when he flashed the ball to the net to leave only 5 points between the sides, but that was as good as it got for Glenealy.Carnew closed out the game with a couple of points to leave them deserving winners on a score of 2-10 to 1-6.Hard lucks Lads. There will be better days ahead.

20th October 2014

Congratulations to the Minor hurlers who defeated Arklow Rocks in the semifinal last Saturday at Pearse Park. The lads were much to strong for their opponents and finished convincing winners 1-20 to 1-4.Their opponents in the final will be either Carnew or Bray who drew in the other semi, and this will be a far tougher encounter, but its down to a two horse race and hope springs eternal.

There was no joy for our Intermediate hurlers when they took on last years Intermediate champions Eire Og in the Billy Byrne cup. They discovered the gap of competing between Senior and Intermediate hurling is significant and ended up on the wrong end of a 1-12 to 0-6 defeat.

Congratulations to senior hurler Aaron Nugent who has been selected on the Irish under 21 team to play Scotland in the Shinty/Hurling test next weekend.

23rd September 2014

The Senior team cruised into another County final without having to get out of first gear last Saturday evening in Aughrim. The expected challenge from Avondale didn't materialise and indeed only for half a dozen good saves from the Avondale goalkeeper the 23 point winning margin could have been much wider. The lads were completely focused from the throw in and were not in the mood to show any mercy to their opponents.A string of early points from Gavin,Leighton,Wayne,Bosco and Steven put them into a healthy position and a goal on the stroke of half time by Enan gave them a commanding lead at the break 1-12 to 1-4.Then within a minute of the second half throw in two by Gavin and Enan more or less ended it as a contest.A further goal by Wayne and another run of points by Steven and Jack left the final score 4-22 to 1-8.The Glenealy scorers were Steven 0-9,Leighton 0-7,Enan 2-0,Gavin 1-2,Wayne 1-2,Jack 0-2.The lads are now firmly focused on Oct,5th when they take on Bray in the final, and no stone will be left unturned in the effort to take the O,Donahue Cup back to the Village once again.

They say goals win games and so it proved last Wednesday evening when our Minor hurlers were defeated by Bray in the Park.In general play there was very little between the sides even though Bray were the much bigger physical side, the main difference was when Bray got their goal chances they took them while we didn't,and in the end we were well beaten on the scoreboard 4-12 to 0-11.

18th August 2014

Well done to the Senior hurlers who cemented their place in the Championship semi-finals with a good win over St.Pats in Aughrim last Saturday evening. This was,nt a vintage display by any means and it was only in the last quarter that we showed what we are capable of.A lot of committed hard work in needed before we play our semi as there are no easy games in Championship knockout hurling. Our two final group games are again Bray and Carnew and both will provide stern opposition with the league title up for grabs. The final score last Saturday was 4-14 to 2-6.

There was no winner of the jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 3.19.21.27.The Jackpot this week stands at €6,200.

Congratulations and well done to young Charlie Cruise one of our upcoming hurlers who represented his Club and County in Croke Park during the halftime break in the All-Ireland hurling semi-final between Tipperary and Cork.

14th July 2014

The Senior and Intermediate hurlers both recorded good victories last Saturday in Aughrim. In the first game the Intermediate,s took on old rivals Carnew and with James Manley,Cian Kelly and Jack Kavanagh keeping the score board ticking over regularly, and Lee Kavanagh and Niall Keogh and Dec Conyard keeping things tight in defence they never looked in danger of defeat and eventually won on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-6.

The Senior team was out  against Kiltegan in the second game and after a tight enough first where we looked a bit ring rusty we only led by a point at half time.0-9 to 2-2.In the second half we upped the tempo and  early goals from Gavin Weir (2) and Enan Glynn put us in the driving seat,in the last quarter we played some great combination hurling and took scores at will. The final score was Glenealy 3-18,Kiltegan 2-5.The Glenealy scorers were.G.Weir 2-1.L Glynn 0-5.E Glynn 1-2.A.Conyard 0-3.D Staunton 0-2.T Doyle 0-2.J O,Neill 0-2.W O,Gorman 0-1.

The Intermediate hurlers got their championship aspirations off to a good start with a resounding victory over Barndarrig last Saturday evening. This was one way traffic for most of the game with the lads picking off scores at will, and in the end they had 17 point victory margin 3-18 to 1-7

Their was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 4.5.18.19.This weeks Jackpot is €3.500.

9th June 2014

The Junior hurlers despite putting up stout resistance were were beaten by a strong Kilcoole last Wednesday evening in the Park.  Kilcoole only got regraded from Intermediate this year and their experience of having played  at a higher grade was evident ,nevertheless our lads fought to the end and there was only 4 points in it at the end 2-16 to 3-9.

Gavin Jameson made his comeback in this game and scored a great goal when introduced in the second half. The lads next game is this Wednesday 11th June, away to Bray

The Seniors and Intermediates are playing this coming Saturday in their respective championships. The Seniors play last years Intermediate champions Eire Og and the Intermediates take on near neighbours Barndarrig.

The Club extends its best wishes to young hurler Warren Kavanagh who celebrates his 21st birthday is Saturday evening in the Leitrim Lounge.

2nd June 2014

The Junior hurlers received a serious setback to retaining their league title last Friday evening when they were defeated 2-17 to 2-12 by Avondale in Corballis.

Only 14 players out of a panel of 22 turned up for this important fixture and Manager Niall Keogh was fuming at the lack of interest shown.  The team Physio John O,Gorman had to tog out to make up15 and he did quite well in goal.

Their next match is at home to Kilcoole this Wednesday 4th June.

This will be a tough fixture as Kilcoole were only regraded from Intermediate this year, lets hope all the players will show a little bit more respect for for their team and Manager this week and that there is a full turnout for this game.

The Senior team were out in the first round of the Championship last Sunday evening in Arklow against local rivals Avondale and after an exciting hours hurling the sides finished level 1-12 to 2-9.

Glenealy will probably be the happier of the two sides as they had to start without 7 of their Championship winning side.

Stephen Nolan was the only one of the back line that started the County final last year.

Glenealy were on top for the first 5 minutes but hit 3 or 4 bad wides.  Avondale took up the running for the next 15 minutes and opened up a 6 point gap,  but Glenealy responded well and narrowed the gap to a point at the break thanks mainly to a typical Wayne O,Gorman goal when he waltzed through half the Avondale defence to slot the ball home.

In the second half both sides were wasteful and hit bad wides from both play and frees but the Dales did move 4 points clear with 6 or 7 minutes left 2-9 to 1-7.   Stephen Nolan who had been allocated free-taking duties at this stage was unerring with his shots and the game finished level.

In fact Glenealy had two great chances to win it in the final minute with the Avondale goalie making a great save, and an Alan Conyard shot grazing the wrong side of the post with the last puck of the game.

Under the circumstances Glenealy will be probably happy enough with their point while Avondale  will probably view it as a great chance to put one over on the Champions let slip. The lads next game in the Championship is again Eire Og in two weeks time.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 5.11.17.22.The Jackpot next week is €2,900.

26th May 2014

The Intermediate hurlers recorded a very good win last Monday evening away to Carnew in the Div 2 league. The lads put in a great all round performance and led from pillar to post and were well worth their 2-14 to 0-8 victory.

On last Wednesday evening it was the turn of the Junior hurlers to show their class when they played Eire Og in the Park.  This was a high quality game with both sides impressing.  After a tight first half we had a 3 point lead 1-7 to 1-4,  due mainly to a Ryan Devlin goal.

In the second half we pulled away and at one stage led by 9 points but a late Eire Og  goal and point left 5 points in it at the end.

The full time score was Glenealy 4-12.Eire Og 3-10.  This was another good all round performance and it was particularly pleasing to see young players like Ryan Devlin,  Aaron Meade,  Ronan Manley,  Cormac Geraghty and Robin Keogh coming through and making a big impact.

The scorers Vinnie O,Flaherty 2-2.Ryan Devlin 1-2.Barry McNabb 1-2.Aaron Meade 0-4.Ross O,Brien 0-1.Liam De Hora 0-1.

The Juniors next game is away to Avondale next Wednesday evening (tonight).

The Seniors have their first Championship game next Sunday evening in Arklow at 6.30pm when they play local rivals Avondale.  As Senior Champions the lads will be hoping to get their campaign off to a good start with a victory, but it wont be easy as the Dales always raise their game when they meet us.

Lets see a big show of support in Arklow on Sunday evening to cheers the lads on.

There was no Jackpot winner in the Club Lotto last week. The numbers drawn were 1.8.12.19.The Jackpot this week stands at €2,600.

19th May 2014

The Intermediate and Junior teams both recorded good victories last week.  The Intermediates took on Arklow Rocks in the new Div 2 league in the Park last Monday evening and after a tight enough first half they had a 4 point lead at the break 0-7 to 0-4.  They piled on the pressure in the second half and ran out comfortable winners in the end 3-12 to 0-7.

The Junior team traveled to West Wicklow on Wednesday evening to play Western Gaels.  They proved much to strong on the night for their Western counterparts and had a 20 point winning margin at the end of the game 4-16 to 1-5.   Their next game is against Eire Og in the Park this Wednesday evening (Tonight).

Their was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club lotto. The numbers drawn were 7.9.14.26.This weeks Jackpot is €2,300.

Congratulations to Philip Dunne and Nicola Cunningham who tied the knot last Friday.A big contingent left the Village to give Philip moral support and join in the celebrations after in Killashee House ,and i believe there was a lot of tired bodies scattered across the Wicklow Gap on Saturday afternoon trying to find their way home to Glenealy.

12th May 2014

The Junior hurlers are back on track after a first day 2-11 to 1-09 home defeat to a very strong St.Pats side, they travelled to Kiltegan and last Wednesday week and ground out a  9pts to 7pts over the home side.  They then entertained Shillelagh in the park last Wednesday evening, and although they rode their luck on occasions they emerged worthy winners 1-12 to 1-08.   They travel west of the hills this Wednesday (tonight) to play Western Gaels.

Congratulations to Edel Porter-Kennedy who won the Jackpot in the Ashford/Glenealy Club Lotto.  The Jackpot this week starts back at €2,000 still good value for a €2 ticket.

Hard luck to the County hurlers in their Christy Ring Cup replay, and lets hope for better luck next week when they travel to Armagh to take on the home side in the same competition.Good luck also to the County Senior footballers who play Laois in Aughrim in the first round of the Leinster Championship next Sunday.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Jack Hollingsworth,St.Patricks Tce,Rathnew.  Jack affectionately known as Yogi was a larger than life character who was  the main instigator behind the reformation of Camogie in Glenealy after a 20 year gap.

Jack served as Chairman of the Club for nearly 20 years.  He also served as Manager and Selector with many teams.

In his time with the Club from 1978 until 2003  which was the golden era of Glenealy Camogie the Club won every title open to it in Wicklow at every level from under 14 up to Senior,in 1991.

They also broke the Provincial barrier beating Druncullen from Offaly 2-11 to 2-05 in the Leinster final.

In that period at Senior level Glenealy could rub shoulders with and defeat Clubs of the calibre of Rathnure, Buffers Alley, UCD, Na Fianna and Myshall.

While the exact amount of Cups and Trophies won under Jacks leadership may never be known,  it would be fair to say it exceeded 80.

In 2003,  Jacks last year with the Club  the Intermediate treble of Championship, League and Shield was won.  We may never see Jacks like again.

The esteem and affection that was felt for Jack could be seen by the amount of his girls who turned out to form a guard of honour in the red and white of Glenealy.

To his wife Molly who was the woman behind the man and another great servant of Glenealy Camogie, his daughters Marie,Patsy and Triena, his sons John and Jim, his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, his extended family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy.

May he rest in Peace.

25th November 2013

The small close knit community of Glenealy was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of one of its favourite sons Liam O,Toole,Balinacoola last Wednesday night.

Liam came from one of the most respected families in the area,a family that has always been closely connected to Glenealy hurling Club with his late father Sean, his late uncle Des and brother Paddy all having wore the famous red jersey.

Liam himself was one of the players who kept the Glenealy flag flying in a time when we didn't have the the selection of players the Club has now.  He had a reputation of being a fearsome no nonsense defender who cleared his lines with the minimum of fuss.

In 1978 Liam was part of the Junior team that won the League and got to a County semifinal, and the following year he was part of the Senior team that won the Division 1 league.

Apart from hurling Liams other great love was motorbikes and he spent a lot of time with his friends raising funds for worthy causes with sponsored bike runs.

A testament to the esteem that Liam was held in was evident by the large attendance from the Village and the surrounding areas at his removal to Glenealy Church Friday evening, and at his burial on Saturday morning in Glenealy Cemetery.

Liams friends from both Glenealy Hurling Club and the biking fraternity provided a guard of honour with up to 20 bikes leading the Cortege and Liam  being flanked by his many Club and team mates in the Club colours,as he made his last journey up Glenealy Hill to his final resting place.

May the green sod of the little Valley you loved so well rest gently on you Liam old friend.and may you rest in peace.

Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to Liams mother Susan his brother Paddy, sisters Catherine and Carmel, his brothers in law Mike and Johnny his sister in law Carmel, his nieces and nephews and his many, many friends.RIP.

11th November 2013

The Minor hurlers exited the Championship at semifinal stage last Sunday when the were comprehensively defeated by Bray.  When these two sides met earlier in the year Bray only won by a point  with Glenealy relinquishing a 5 point lead in the last few minutes,  unfortunately on this occasion to many of our players underperformed and we went down 3-15 to 0-9.

There was no winner of the jackpot in the Club Loto last week. The numbers drawn were 9.13.14.17.The Jackpot this week is €4,100.

28th October 2013

The Senior hurlers bowed out of the Leinster Club championship last Saturday when they were defeated by Buffers Alley 1-19to 3-4.But the scoreline do sent tell the whole story,Due to circumstances mainly outside our control we had field without 6 or 7 of our first team squad.Beating the Alley who are one of the top Clubs in Wexford and were only regraded from Senior last year is a big ask at anytime but on Saturday is was a mountain to climbed. The game itself was played in conditions not conducive to good hurling with a strong wind and incessant rain.We held our vaunted opponents for the first half when we had the elements at our back and went in level at the break 1-4 each, indeed with a little more luck we could have been 3 or 4 points up.In the second half with the wind at their backs the Alley had most of the possession and picked off points at their will. The lads can be proud of their efforts with a much depleted squad and while defeat was their lot they did something that no Wexford team did again the Alley in the Wexford Championship and that was to put 3 goals past them,In their 7 games in Wexford they had only conceded 2 goals overall. Our scorers on Saturday were Bosco 1-3,Stephen 2-0 and Gavin Weir 0-1.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 1.2.8.10.The Jackpot this week is €3,500.

Congratulations to Rathnew on another great victory last Sunday in the Senior Football final, and a special mention for the 4 Glenealy lads Enan,Leighton (who picked up another man of the match award),John and Warren.Best of luck next week in Longford.

21st October 2013

Congratulations to the Senior hurlers on their great victory over Bray last Sunday in the County final. This was a good game between two highly committed sides,Bray trying to bridge a 60 year gap,and Glenealy going for a historic 4 in a row.If the records are right we are now in joint second place in the County with 14 Senior titles, and who knows what this panel of players can achieve in the future,if they want to.Congratulations to Leighton who was select man of the match after a towering display that Bray had no answer to,at times he seemed to be in 2 or 3 different position on the field at the same time.Joey probably had his best ever game between the post and was determined not to be beaten, and young Danny Staunton showed that he is going to be a big player for Glenealy in the years to come.In fact every man that pulled on that famous red jersey  last Sunday and throughout the year played their part in this great victory. The final score was Glenealy 17pts.Bray 14pts.

Glenealy scorers were Leighton 11pts. Bosco 2pts. and Gary,Robert,Wayne and Tommy a point each. One disappointing thing about last Sunday was the constant barrage of abuse and booing by a section of the so called Bray supporters towards our players throughout the game.We know this goes on in a different code but there is no place for it in our game, genuine supporters go to cheer their own team not abuse their opponents.Another disappointment was that their was no hot showers for the teams after the the game, this was our showpiece hurling final and it is not near good enough that our players are treated in this way.Our next opponents are the famed Buffers Alley from Wexford in the first round of the Leinster Championship.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 7.18.19.22.The jackpot next week stands at €3,200.

The Club would like to thank Stafford Fuels for their sponsorship of a set of socks for the final,it was much appreciated.

The Club extends it deepest sympathy to the Dempsey family,Redcross on the sad passing of Vincent recently.Vincent,s son Enda is a member of our Minor hurling team.

The Club sends its best wishes to neighbours Rathnew who play Baltinglass next Sunday in the Senior football final,Hopefully Miley will be joining O,Donahue for a drink in Kings next Sunday evening.

14th October 2013

Good luck to the Senior hurlers who take on Bray in the County final next Sunday. After two hard games again Carnew lets hope there is still a bit left in the tank, and we can create history by winning another title.Training has been going well and there is a steely look of determination in the lads eyes like never before,we know Championships are not won easily and are prepared for a battle royal against a Bray side who will be trying to follow up on all their underage success in recent years,by winning a Senior title. The colour has been increasing steadily in the Village and come next Sunday it should be awash with red and white. We hope to see the same in Aughrim  with our supporters cheering the lads on to what we hope will be another Senior title.Last one leaving the Village please close the gate.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 21.23.26.27..This weeks Jackpot is €2,900.

Congratulations to near neighbours Rathnew on reaching the County Senior football final after a great spirited display last Sunday.

The Club would like to extends its deepest sympathy to Billy Barrett and family Drumdangan on the death of Billy,s sister Sheila (Sis) in England recently.May she rest in peace.

7th October 2013

Well done to the Senior hurlers who have qualified for their 11th  final in a row but not before  they had to endure a serious challenge of their credentials.

This was no place for boys as the say with every player on the field contesting every ball as if their life depended on it,and there was no quarter asked or given and a lot of big hits were put in but generally played in a sporting manner considering a County final place was at stake.

Playing with the stiff breeze Glenealy started well and had a couple of early points on the board Carnew came back at us and it was nip and tuck going into halftime but a great finish from Enan Glynn had the umpire stooping for the green flag as the Ref blew the short whistle.

This score left a bit of daylight between the two sides at the break with the score 1-6 to 0-5 in our favour  and how vital that goal was Carnew came back at us in the second half as we knew they would and they hit the front by a point going into injury 0-11 to 1-7 but we got a last minute pressure free and Leighton split the post to bring the game to extra time.

We started the better and put a few scores on the board including a Stephen Nolan brace  but Carnew came back again and put the game in the melting pot with a goal but straight from the puck out Wayno as only he can got his stick to a long clearance and divert the ball into the Carnew net.

We went in leading 2-12 to 1-12 at the break in extra time and with points from Gavin Byrne 2 Enan 1 and big Al.This was the best game of hurling played all year and could have gone either way but as they say the only time the score board matters is when the Ref blows the final whistle and thankfully Glenealy were ahead 2-16 to Carnews 1-15.

Glenealy scorers were Enan 1-4.Leighton 0-3.Danny 0-3.Stephen 0-2.Gavin 0-2.Bosco.0-1.Alan 0-1.On a disappointing  note it has always been a tradition between these two great hurling rivals that a mentor from the losing side would visit the winners dressing room to wish them well sadly this did not occur on this occasion.

It is all hands to the pump now for the next couple of weeks to make sure no stone is left unturned in the Clubs quest to win another Senior title.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 6.7.8.20.The Jackpot next week stands at €2,600.

23rd September 2013

The Senior hurlers drew their semi final meeting with Carnew after a hard fought game.  Every ball was keenly contested we were 3 points in arrears at half time 0-4 to 0-7 and went 5 points down half way through the second half 0-8 to 1-10 but the lads showed their character and battling qualities  to go 2 points up with 5 minutes left on the clock.

Carnew reeled us back in to go level, entering additional time we went a point up again but failed to control the Carnew puck out and gave a free away which Carnew converted for the equaliser.  The final score was 1-11 to 1-11.  The replay is in Aughrim on Sunday Oct 6th.

Congratulations to Andrew Courtenay and Tim Manning who shared the €11,100 Jackpot in the Ashford/Glenealy Club Lotto last week.each received €5,550.The Jackpot starts back this week at €2,000.

We were saddened to hear of the death of Patty Jacob,  Rathdrum recently.  The Jacob family have been great friends of Glenealy Hurling Club for many years.  We extend our deepest sympathy to Patty's husband Joe her sons Noel, Buster and James, her daughters Mary,Bernie,Patricia and Curly and her extended family.May she rest in peace..

16th September 2013

The intermediate hurlers were defeated by Eire Og in the Championship semifinal last Sunday.

Eire Og were the better side on the day.  We closed the gap to 3 points in the second half with a Glen O,Gorman goal but couldn't push on from there and were eventually beaten 17 points to 1-8.

On a day when to many of our players struggled to make an impact on the game Declan Conyard gave a man of the match performance at corner back and Keith Snell kept a another clean sheet making one outstanding save from Billy Cuddihy.

The best of luck to Eire Og in the final, it can only be good for Wicklow hurling if another Club can make the breakthrough to Senior ranks.

The Minor hurlers proved much too strong for St Pats last Wednesday evening in Dunbur Park when they won on a scoreline of 5-13 to 0-7.  This victory should guarantee them a semifinal place.

Good luck Senior hurlers take on Carnew in the Senior semifinal next Saturday in Aughrim, its a long time since our last meeting at this stage of the competition and both sides will be giving everything to progress to what could be a novel final.

Glenealy have never met St.Pats or Bray in a Senior Championship final and Carnew have never met Bray in one.

Lets see a big support in red and white on Saturday to cheer the lads on and would the last person leaving the Village please close the door.

As had been widely predicted from the time the format was changed for the Senior Huirling Championship Glenealy and Carnew were drawn to play each other in the semi final. The game has been fixed for Saturday 21st in Aughrim.

It was with regret that the Club learned of the death of Johnny Byrne in England recently.Johnny formerly of Chapel Lane,Glenealy was a fine hurler who won Junior and Minor Championship medals in 1951 in 1952 he won another Minor Championship.and no doubt if he hadn't emigrated in 1956 he would have been on the 3 in a row side of the late 50s.Johnny was also an accomplished footballer he was on the Glenealy football team that was defeated by Baltinglass  in the 1952 Minor final and he won Junior B football Championship with Ashford in 1954 and a Junior A in 1955.Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to Johnny,s wife Heather, his daughter Fiona, sons Sean and Peter, brother Mickie, sisters Bridie,Francie,Maeve and Carmel.the extended family and many friends.May he rest in peace.

12th August 2013

The Intermediate hurlers had a big win over Carnew in the Championship last Tues evening at Aughrim.  They proved much to strong for their opponents on this occasion and won on a scoreline of 2-22 to 0-6.

The Minor hurlers were a shade unlucky to lose to Bray by the bare minimum on Wednesday evening in the Park.  They held the lead for most of the game but a few debatable decision went against them in the final minutes and they were beaten 2-11 to 2-10.

The under 16s put in another good performance in Corballis last Tues evening when they beat their hosts Avondale 3-10 to 0-5 in the Championship.

29TH July 2013

The Senior hurlers had their first defeat of the season when they lost a close encounter with Carnew.

The concession of a first minute goal and the loss of a player early on didn't help but they kept in touch with their opponents and there was only 3 points in it at half time 1-8 to 0-8.

They fought hard in the second half and went a point up with time running out but the soft concession of a goal and point in additional time left them 3 points down when the full time whistle sounded.

The final score was Carnew 2-12 Glenealy 0-15.Danny Staunton, Tommy Doyle, Warren Kavanagh and Bosco all put in a good hour with Bosco scoring 11 points Tommy 0-3 and Danny 0-1.

There was no winner of last weeks Lotto the numbers drawn were 7.15.18.28.The Jackpot next week is €9,000.

Congratulations to Enan and Anne-Marie on the birth of their baby son Oscar.

22nd July 2013

The Minor hurlers had a good 1-15 to 0-9 victory over Arklow rocks last Wed evening in the Park.  The standout players on the day were Cormac Geraghty in goal,  James and Ronan Manley in defense,  Paul O'Brien in midfield and the roving Danny Staunton and Ryan Devlin in attack.

The Intermediate hurlers were defeated by Eire Óg in Dunbur Park  last Saturday evening.  In recent years there has never been any more than a puck of the ball between these two sides and this game was no different.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 5.8.13.15.The Jackpot next week stands at €8,700.

A set of keys with a miraculous medal attached  was found in the Hall car park last week the owner can contact Meg @ 0879306667

15th July 2013

Apologies the gremlins have been at work for the last few weeks so no Club notes were published but hopefully i have got rid of them.

The Senior team although decimated by injury and suspension had a good win over Bray in the Championship last Saturday evening in Arklow. They had to call on all their experience to grind out a  win, they had a 3 point lead at halftime 1-4 to 0-4 and finished 1-12 to 0-9 winners.

The Junior hurlers won the Don O,Gorman Cup for the 4th year in a row albeit with a little help from our friends in Carnew who drew with our nearest rivals Barndarrig last Monday week.Glenealy and Barndarrig finished level on points but as we had beaten them in the head to head and also had a far greater score difference we retained our League title.Barndarrig got some measure of revenge last Sunday morning when they defeated us in the Junior A semi final after a hard fought game in Ashford. The final score was 1-15 to 2-9 and we wish them the best of luck in the final.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto the numbers drawn were 10.12.15.22.The Jackpot this week stands at €8,400.

The Club sends its best wishes to Warren and Mickaella and Declan and Susan who both had new editions to their families recently,Lottie and Matthew.

The Clubs sends its best wishes to hard working Committee member Meg Geraghty who gave us all a scare when she took ill at the Junior match last Sunday morning but I am glad to report that she is fine it was just a touch of too much sun.

The Club extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Pat Lawless who passed away recently.Pat was better known for his ability on the football field but was an accomplished hurler in his youth and was the goalkeeper when Glenealy won their first under 14 Championship in 1958.They defeated Kiltegan 15-0 to 0-0 in the final played in Annacurra.RIP.

It would be remiss of me if i didn't express the Clubs displeasure at they way one of our players was treated recently by County Officialdom .This player who has hurled at every level for his Club and County, and has been a regular member of the County Senior team for the last decade, and was Captain of the team that reached the Christy Ring  final last year.

In the Championship game again Avondale on June 8th he was red carded ( his first ever in a long career for his Club) for an alleged infraction  that every friend, foe and neutral at the game knew he didn't commit and was not seen by the Referee ,nearly 3 weeks later on June 26th he received notification that he had been suspended for 8 weeks and that he had 3 days to appeal this decision which he did driving to Arklow on June 29th and delivering it personally, another 2 weeks elapsed and on Friday July 12th nearly 5 weeks after the alleged incident he received word that his appeal hearing was fixed for Monday July 15th in Aughrim, due to the hard work of one of our Comm. members this hearing was brought forward to the Friday evening but despite credible  evidence that the player had been wrongly cited for something he didn't do the appeals Comm. in their wisdom or lack of it decided that his 8 week suspension stood.Glenealy Club would like to thank the Avondale player for acknowledging no such infraction happened and also thank a well respected and prominent Official  of the County Board who came forward and gave evidence that the offence the Glenealy player was charged with didn't happen, but sadly this crucial evidence doesn't appear to have been  believed.Perhaps the most worrying and depressing part in all of this is that a player whether he is innocent or guilty of an offence should have to wait such an inordinate amount of time, nearly 6 weeks, before a date is set for his appeal to be  considered. In some ways it shows where we are in the scheme of things as a County.I write this in the hope that in some way it will save another player from suffering the same indignity and lack of respect in the future as our player did.

27th May 2013

The Intermediate side took on Bray seniors away on Friday evening in the Spring League, they pushed them all the way and were somewhat unlucky to lose by 2 points 1-15 to 1-13.

The Seniors played Carnew in the Park on Saturday evening. This was a game that was played with Championship fervour at times and the lads showed great character in snatching  victory from what looked like a defeat with 10 minutes left on the clock as they trailed by 9 points and a man down, but 3 great goals by Alan,Wayne and Bosco drew us level and Bosco hit the winner from a free after some great work by Jack Kavanagh to earn it.

The Junior hurlers have had two more good victories in the league last Wednesdays week.  They had a one sided win over Fergal Ogs in the Park 9-20 to 0-0 and last Weds they defeated their hosts Barndarrig 3-12 to 0-12.  Their next game is in the Park this evening (Wed 15th May) again Arklow Rocks.

The Intermediate hurlers hosted Eire Og last Monday evening in the Spring League and after a good game of hurling had to give best to their opponents on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-8.

On Sunday morning they played Avondale in the Park it was level at the break after a keenly contested half but an early second half goal by Jamie Byrne put Glenealy in the driving seat and a string of points by Alan Conyard, Gavin Weir and Vinnie O,Flaherty secured victory 1-14 to 0-9.

1st April 2013

The Senior hurlers fought out a high scoring draw again Davidstown last Saturday.  They looked to have the game won at halftime as they had a 7 point lead (11 points  to 4 ) but the concession of too many soft frees in the second half let their opponents back into the game and it finished 18 points each.

Warren Kavanagh gave a towering display in defence and Alan Conyard, Danny Staunton and Steven Cody always looked dangerous in attack.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Lotto.  The numbers drawn were 6.19.25.28.The Jackpot this week stands at €3,900.

26th November 2012

The Minor final against Bray ended in a low scoring draw yesterday. The final score was 1-7 each. The game was played in Arklow on a water soaked pitch in incessant rain and did nothing to enhance the promotion of hurling in the County, all credit to both teams for trying to play in such atrocious conditions. There are only 4 Minor hurling teams in the County so why  are we playing the final 4 weeks before Christmas, surely this Competition can be started and finished in August or September when there is a chance that the weather will be much more conducive to the game of hurling.

5th November 2012

Congratulations to the Intermediate hurlers on winning the Championship last Saturday and served up a great display of hurling in doing so.   There wasn't a weak link on the team and every player gave his all with Eoin O'Neill, Aaron Nugent, Wes Manning,  Jack Kavanagh and Niall Keogh playing particularly well. They beat a good Eire Og side 1-13 to 1-08.   Hard luck to Eire Og who are putting a lot of hard work into promoting hurling in their area, and their time will surely come soon.  Well done to manager Ian O'Neill who has now delivered 2 Intermediate Championships in 4 years, and also well done to his co selectors Deckie Doyle and Nigel Cody.
Hard luck to the Senior hurlers who were beaten 0-15 to 0-10 by Oliver Plunketts in Arklow last Sunday in the Leinster Championship.  Iit was one of those days when nothing went right from the start, Colm and Leighton were ruled out just before the game with injuries, and we lost M A after 20 minutes with injury.  Wayne picked up a harsh red card before halftime.  We were ahead 8 points to 4 at the break but in the second half we lost our composure, thanks in no small way to some of the most bizarre Refereeing decisions  ever witnessed on a hurling field.  The GAA have a Crusade going presently - Give Respect Get Respect,  but respect has to be earned and there is no way the standard of  Refereeing in last Sundays game would get the respect of any true hurling follower.  We are sometimes critical our own officials but if the performance of the Wexford official on Sunday was an indication of the standard outside Wicklow we are very lucky to have people like John Keenan,  Damien Byrne, Jimmy Kelly etc officiating within our County.  The best of luck to Plunketts in the next round.
There are 4 of the Ferndale set of Jerseys missing would all players check their gear bags for same and who ever has them return  to David Driver ASAP.

There was no winner of the Jackpot in last weeks Club Lotto. The numbers drawn were 20.21.26.27.This weeks Jackpot stands at €19,000 and all match 3  will now share €600.

The Club would like to thank local Publicans the King family for sponsoring a new set of Senior Jerseys,

Best wishes  to Wally Manley who is convalescing in hospital after recent major surgery. Wally was one of Glenealys and Wicklows best ever hurlers who always showed great battling qualities on the field, and no doubt those same qualities will stand to him now and see him make a speedy and full recovery.

22nd October 2012

As one walked home the Lucky Brook road in the early hours of last Monday morning, slightly inebriated, I might add, you could be forgiven if you imagined you heard the cheers and sighs of contentment coming out of the little Cemetery where so many former Glenealy greats lie - Hurling men like Tom Cooney, Jack Murphy, Mac Byrne who were on the first 3 in a row side. Don O'Gorman and John O'Neill were  on the teams who kept the game going in the 70s and 80s and won a couple of  Championships as well.  The long wait was over 3 in a row had been achieved again and another group of young men have written themselves into Glenealy hurling folklore.

While the game its self may not have been as free flowing as the last 2 finals this game was all about winning and every Glenealy player on the field had that steely resolve they were not going to be beaten.T he final score was 1-11 to 10 points and the team were well worth that victory margin.  The big surprise was the appearance of Leighton Glynn having been out for 5 months with injury it was a big gamble by the selectors but it paid off.  Every player played his part in this victory.  Bosco gave his usual polished performance and received  the man of the match award.  the backs had the Carnew forwards in a vice like grip.  Joey probably had his quietest hour between the posts for years.  The midfield battled hard all day and our forwards always looked dangerous and had the beatings of the Carnew defenders most off the time.   There was wild celebrations in the Glenealy dressing room after the game and the bad news for the rest of the hurling teams in the County is they are not contented to stop at 3 -  they are going for 4 next year.
In all the Senior celebrations we should not forget that our Intermediate team have qualified for another final after beating Kilcoole in a well contested game on Saturday.  The now meet old adversary's Eire Og,Greystones in the final.  Check Wicklow People for details of date and venue.

15th October 2012

Well done to our Intermediate and Senior hurling teams who both recorded good victories last weekend,The Intermediates gave a Kilkennyesque performance in Arklow on Saturday when they comfortably defeated Kilcoole by a 20 point margin 2-22 to 0-8.

The victory leaves them Intermediate League champions and also top seed in the Championship where their semifinal opponents are are likely to be Kilcoole again.

The Seniors met a fully fired up Avondale side on Sunday in the in the Championship semifinal and had to call on all their experience to withstand the expected strong challenge from the Dales.

They played against a stiff breeze in the first half and were only a point down at the break 0-5 to 0-6 indeed they could have been in front but missed a couple of good goal chances.  They upped their performance in the second half holding their opponents to 3 points while scoring 9 themselves to run out winners 0-14  to 0-9.  This victory puts them in their 10th consecutive final where the will meet old rivals Carnew.

Congratulations to the under 16 hurlers who had a great win over Eire Og in the B final played in Arklow last Sunday morning. Stephen Cruise put in a man of the match performance and right up there with him were Paul O,Brien,Dean O,Gorman,Aaron Meade and Kevin O'Halloran who showed why they are all going to be Glenealy senior stars of the future.

In fact every player who took the field played his part in what was an all round great performance, and they were well worth their 1-15 to 1-5 victory.  Well done  to trainer Tommy Doyle and his backroom staff as well - all their hard work reaped its rewards.

The Seniors hurlers took another step towards a semifinal spot with a victory over St.Patricks last Saturday evening in Aughhrim, and while the standard may not have been the highest the closeness of the exchanges made it interesting until the end.

6th August 2012

The Seniors had a comfortable win over Corbett Gaels last Tuesday evening in Bray.  The game was spoiled somewhat by rain and a strong wind.   Playing against the wind in first half,  Glenealy built up a 1-7 to 0-1 halftime lead.  The goal -  a well worked move with Paddy providing the finish.  The second half was like the first, with Glenealy dominating most of the play but not taking all their chances but they did add 6 further points to their opponents 1 to run out 1-13 to 0-2 winners.  The scorers were Paddy 1-1,Enan 0-3,Eoin 0-3,Bosco 0-2,Aaron 0-1,Alan 0-1,John 0-1 and Gavin Byrne 0-1.

2nd July 2012

The Juniors undefeated run came to an end last Wed evening when they went down to Eire Og by the bare minimum in the Park. The final score was Glenealy 1-15,Eire Og 2-13,this was a game they could and should have won but the concession of some questionable frees and indiscipline let them down and they paid the price.

Their final game in the League is again Avoca.

The Seniors Hurlers shared the spoils with old rivals Carnew in the League on Sunday.   This was a typical Glenealy/Carnew game with tough challenges given and taken.  Glenealy dominated the first half with wind assistance and led 0-7 to 0-1 at half time despite missing a penalty and some other good chances.

Carnew had most of the play in the second half and chipped away at our lead mostly through frees and led by a point going into additional time, but Bosco scored the equalizer from a placed ball leaving the final score 0-9 each. Gary Byrne in defence,Nigel Driver in midfield and Gavin Weir and Aaron Nugent in attack were most prominent on the day

There was no Jackpot winner in the Club Lotto last week. The numbers drawn were 4.8.11.25.The Jackpot this week is €13,700.

12th March 2012

The Junior B team relinquished their title last Sunday morning in Newcastle when the were beaten by Barndarrig 2-9 to 0-10 in the much delayed 2011 final.

They say goals win matches and so it proved, Barndarrig availed of the two chances that came their way while Glenealy didn't take any of the four or five on offer to them.

Barndarrig also looked much fitter and sharper while a lot of the Glenealy players were slow to react and  looked at odds with their hurls after the long lay off.

The sides were level at half time 0-4 each but Barndarrig pulled away in the second period  thanks mainly to their two goal, a lack of fire power was evident in a Glenealy side that depended to much on the free taken of Jack Kavanagh to keep in touch.

Glen O'Gorman played his heart out in defense as did Jamie Byrne in midfield, Alan Kearns, Deckie Doyle and second half substitute Wes Manning were others to catch the eye.

The scorers were Jack Kavanagh 0-7 with points from Jamie Byrne,Ian O'Neill and Cian Kelly.

Emmett Byrne gave a man of the match display.  Ian O'Neill led the line by example and ended up with 3 goals to his credit.  Others to shine on this enthusiastic side were; Cian Kelly surely a star of the future, Stefan O'Brien, Shane Keogh, Glen O'Gorman and Paddy Shannon.

Congratulations to hard working Club member Noel Geraghty who celebrated his 50th birthday with a big party in the Grand Hotel last Thursday night surrounded by family and friends. As usual Noel celebrated in his own inimitable way and judging by some of his intricate footwork on the dance floor Michael Flatley could have some cause for concern in the future.

It was with great sadness that we heard of the untimely passing of Pat Dempsey on Christmas morning.Pat was one of natures gentlemen and a great Gaa,Glenealy and Wicklow  supporter, indeed with his brother Michael he could be seen at many Gaa grounds  throughout the Country wherever a good game was to be found.Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to Pats sons Stephen,Mark,Paul and Eric to his brothers Michael and Oliver his sisters Babs and Anna-May and to his extended family.May he rest in Peace.
